Video Conferencing
People at remote locations using video and audio software and hardware to see and hear each other over a network to conduct a conference is called video conferencing. To support the demand for the service at UC, UCit installed a video Multipoint Control Unit (MCU) in November 2000. The MCU provides live, full duplex video teleconferencing for up to sixteen sites, distance learning, and telemedicine sessions on and off campus.
The UCit video conferencing service can connect multiple points, regardless of the types of systems involved, the connections they use, and the different speeds at which they connect. This means that a videoconference can consist of several desktop PCs on the network, a videoconference room system on ISDN, and a mobile videoconference unit on a T1. The MCU can take full advantage of all three major video protocols: H.320 (ISDN and T1), H.321 (ATM), and H.323 (IP), and can mix protocols together in a single conference session.
