Saving E-Mail (archiving)

Saving e-mail in the online mailbox has advantages. UCit backs up the contents, and users can access e-mail either via mobile devices that communicate with the Exchange server or by using Outlook web access (OWA).

This comes at a cost, however. Unless you manage the inbox by deleting messages as appropriate, you may exceed your storage allocation.

Some e-mail users download the contents of their mailboxes to the hard drives of their computers, if they are utilizing the POP3 protocol in a client such as Eudora Pro, Thunderbird, or Outlook Express. Others direct their mail from the server to personal (.pst) files they have set up in Outlook. Please note that these users are responsible for backing up and maintaining the e-mail. UCit cannot restore the files if they are lost.
Some users implement a combined approach, keeping some e-mail in their online mailboxes and moving others to .pst files. For backup, they store the .pst files on a network drive. However, as above, these files are not accessible from hand-held devices or OWA.

UCit recognizes the need to provide the facilities to retain e-mail records. We are currently evaluating solutions.
